Car accident injures Knoxville firefighter

It is always a tragedy when those who protect us are injured, regardless of whether they are on-duty or off. These brave Knoxville men and women often risk their own lives to keep us safe. But even they can cause car accidents at times, which may result in personal injuries to others.

This was the case on Nov. 2 when a Knoxville firefighter was seriously injured in a car accident just after he got off work. The 29-year-old man’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and crashed into an SUV that was being driven by a 51-year-old woman, according to a Knoxville Police Department spokesperson. It is not known why the firefighter’s vehicle went into the other lane on Chilhowee Drive.

The crash resulted in the man being pinned inside his vehicle, which required other firefighters to extract him. The man suffered severe injuries to his lower extremities. The driver of the other vehicle was also injured and both were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment. They were later listed in stable condition.

No charges have yet been filed in connection with the incident. As mentioned above, the reason the vehicle veered into oncoming traffic is still not known. However, it is known that the firefighter had just finished a 24-hour shift, which may or may not have contributed to the accident.
