Applying for Social Security Disability over 50

Suffering from poor health can hugely affect a person’s ability to earn an income. Being involuntarily unemployed can lead to stress due to financial issues. In turn, this stress can contribute to further health complications, and may even cause mental issues such as anxiety and depression.

If you are unable to earn an income because of a disability and you are over the age of 50, you are subject to a different assessment than Social Security Disability (SSD) applicants under the age of 50. This is why it is a good idea to consider filing for SSD even if you have had your application denied in the past.

What is SSD?

SSD is a type of disability benefit that is offered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). To be successful in making a claim, applicants must be able to show that they are ready and willing to work, but they are unable to do so because of their disability. They must also be able to prove that they are unable to carry out “substantial gainful activity,” in other words, a job that would provide them with a sufficient income to live, due to their disabling medical condition. This medical condition should have existed for at least 12 months, or be predicted to last more than 12 months, to be recognized.

How are those over 50 more likely to be successful in making a claim?

The SSA recognizes that those over the age of 50 have fewer jobs available to them. As an older person, it is more difficult to learn new skills and train in a new career. It is also less worthwhile to invest in these skills when approaching retirement. This is why the SSA is more accommodating to older applicants.

What other factors are taken into account when assessing those over the age of 50?

The SSA will consider your level of education and work history when assessing your application. Generally speaking, those who have a low level of education and limited work history will have a better chance of being successful.

If you are over the age of 50 and are unable to gain a significant income because of your disability, you should consider taking action to file for SSD.
