Driver dead, others injured in distracted driving car wreck

A car crash at the intersection of U.S. 245 and Sowell Hollow Road on April 29 left one person dead and three others injured. The fatal car wreck happened at about 5 p.m., when two vehicles collided head-on at the intersection. Official reports show that one of the drivers was likely driving while distracted, which contributed to the severity of the crash.

Authorities say that a Nissan Pathfinder in the northbound lane veered across the center line and crashed head-on into a Toyota Corolla that was traveling southbound. A passenger in the front seat of the Corolla was ejected through the windshield as the vehicle spun because of the crash. The driver of that vehicle, age 30, was killed in the car accident. Official reports show that at least one driver or passenger was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Criminal charges are still pending in the matter, according to authorities.

Drivers who cause crashes because they are using a cellphone while driving should be held accountable for their negligence and misdeeds. The driver of the smaller vehicle in this instance died because the other driver was allegedly text messaging or using his phone, perhaps in violation of Tennessee cellphone law. There is never an excuse for distracted driving.
